History of Edmonton

1902 First train into Edmonton (City of Edmonton Archives EA-10-1277)

Edmonton’s modern history traces back to the Cree and Blackfoot nations who populated the North Saskatchewan River Valley. The major development of the Fort Edmonton fur trade transformed the early settlement into the town of Edmonton. Over time a series of booms and busts occurred but the population gradually expanded to both sides of the River Valley. The discovery of the Leduc Oil Field in 1947 proved to be a significant factor in Edmonton’s history as the population density exploded; making Edmonton one of the fastest growing cities in North America.

Today, in addition to its prominence as a petro-chemical industry leader, Edmonton has transformed into a cultural, governmental and educational centre. It plays host to a year-round world-class festivals, earning it the title of "The Festival City."  For a further glimpse into Edmonton’s past, please visit History of Edmonton.
