2015 ITU World Triathlon Edmonton

ITU World Triathlon Edmonton

The eyes of the world will be on Edmonton on September 5 & 6, 2015, as the ITU World Triathlon Edmonton comes to William Hawrelak Park. This highly prestigious, international event will feature world-class athletes from around the globe.

Road Closures and Traffic Delays

A number of road closures will be in effect from Saturday September 5 to Sunday, September 6 to ensure the safety of competitors, volunteers and spectators. Major travel delays can be expected in the areas southwest of downtown and the University of Alberta.

Motorists are urged to plan ahead to avoid driving delays. Use Whitemud Drive, Anthony Henday Drive, Low Level Bridge, James MacDonald Bridge and 107 Avenue as alternate routes.

Saturday September 5 Road Closures

6:30am to 4pm:

  • Groat Road from 87 Avenue to Victoria Park Road
  • Groat Road northbound from Victoria Park Road to 107 Avenue
  • Victoria Park Road from 100 Avenue to Groat Road
  • River Valley Road westbound from 105 Street to Groat Road. (Local access only to the Royal Glenora Club and Victoria Golf Course.)
  • Emily Murphy Park Road from Saskatchewan Drive to Hawrelak Park

 Sunday September 6 Road Closures

7:30am to 12:30pm:

  • Groat Road from 87 Avenue to 107 Avenue
  • Emily Murphy Park Road from Saskatchewan Drive to Hawrelak Park
  • Saskatchewan Drive from 87 Avenue to 116 Street
  • 116 Street from Edinboro Road to Saskatchewan Drive
  • 118 Street from Edinboro Road to Saskatchewan Drive
  • Edinboro Road from 116 Street to 118 Street

12:30pm to 7pm:

  • Groat Road from 87 Avenue to Victoria Park Road
  • Groat Road northbound from Victoria Park Road to 107 Avenue
  • Victoria Park Road from 100 Avenue to Groat Road
  • River Valley Road westbound from 105 Street to Groat Road. (Local access only to the Royal Glenora Club and Victoria Golf Course.)
  • Emily Murphy Park Road from Saskatchewan Drive to Hawrelak Park

Free ETS Shuttle Service

Free shuttle service will be available to and from Hawrelak Park during the ITU World Triathlon Edmonton. 

Saturday September 5

Buses will run on a 10 minute service frequency from Windsor Car Park (116 Street and 92 Avenue) to Hawrelak Park starting at 6am. This shuttle will also stop at 116 Street and 87 Avenue to pick up and drop off passengers. The last departure from Hawrelak Park back to Windsor Car Park will be 6pm.

Sunday September 6

Buses will run on a 10 minute service frequency from Windsor Car Park (116 Street and 92 Avenue) to Hawrelak Park starting at 6am. This shuttle will also stop at 116 Street and 87 Avenue to pick up and drop off passengers. The last departure from Hawrelak Park back to Windsor Car Park will be at 8pm.*

*NOTE: On Sunday September 6 there will be NO shuttle service between 1:15pm and 2:40pm, and between 3:30pm and 4:40pm due to restrictions on the roadways around Hawrelak Park during the Elite races. 

ETS Bus Detours

On Saturday September 5 and Sunday September 6, routes ​128 ​and​ 130 will detoured as required.

Parking

Parking is not available at Hawrelak Park. Specator parking is available at the University of Alberta's Windsor, Stadium and Education Car Parks. Parking is not permitted on the course. A number of meters will be hooded. Please obey all signs, as illegally parked vehicles will be tagged and towed.

Bicycles

Why not ride your bike to Hawrelak Park? Public bike racks will be set up in the park. Spectators can stay in the park to watch the action, or venture out on the bicycle and running course to get a closer look at their favourite triathletes.

The hourly restrictions for bicycles on buses and the LRT have been waived for the duration of the 2015 ITU World Triathlon Edmonton. This applies to all bicycle riders, not just the triathletes in town for the race.

Taxis and Private Shuttles

Due to the event road closures, all taxis and private shuttles will drop off and pick up from the Northern Alberta Jubilee north ground parking lot near 87 Avenue and 115 Street. All guests may transfer to the Health Sciences LRT Station Circuit to access Hawrelak Park.

Park Access

William Hawrelak Park

William Hawrelak Park will be closed to vehicles from 4pm on Friday September 4 to the end of the day on Sunday September 6.

Emily Murphy Park

Due to road closures there will be limited or no access into or out of Emily Murphy Park ​(including the boat launch)​​​ on the following dates and times: ​
  • Saturday September 5, from 6am–6:45pm 
  • Sunday September 6, from 6am–6:15pm

Government House Park

Due to road closures there will be limited or no access into or out of Government House Park on the following dates and times: 
  • Saturday September 5, from 6am–6:45pm 
  • Sunday September 6, from 6am–6:15pm ​
Please note that access will be restricted the night prior, preventing early morning access.​

Victoria Park

Access to Victoria Park will only be available via the westbound lanes of River Valley Road during the following times: 
  • Saturday September 5, from 5am–2:30pm 
  • Sunday September 6, from 5am–6:15pm ​
Please note that access will be restricted the night prior, preventing early morning parking.​

Victoria Golf Course Access

If you're visiting Victoria Golf Course and Driving Range over the Labour Day weekend, please be aware of access limitations:

Saturday September 5: 
  • Access is available via River Valley Road westbound and Groat Road southbound.
Sunday September 6: 
  • Access is available all day via River Valley Road westbound.  
  • Until approximately 1pm, access will also be available via Victoria Park Hill.  
  • At 1pm, access from Victoria Park Hill will close, and access from Groat Road southbound will open.

Monday September 7: 
  • River Valley Road will be closed to general traffic from noon to 4pm. However, traffic to and from the golf course will be permitted through a single access point. Please leave extra time as automobile traffic may be temporarily stopped to allow cyclists through.  
  • Access to the golf course will be northbound only, and access from the course will be southbound only.
