Supporting the Supporters: How Friends and Family Can Help Prevent Family Violence
Date: Monday, November 2, 2015
Time: Noon-1pm
Location: City Room, City Hall
Lana Wells, event guest speaker, holds the Brenda Strafford Chair in the Prevention of Domestic Violence in the Faculty of Social Work, University of Calgary and is leading Shift: The Project to End Domestic Violence. Shift's goal is to significantly reduce and prevent domestic violence in Alberta. Shift has written an issues brief exploring the value of informal networks, and how best to support those networks to effectively respond to the needs of individuals impacted by domestic violence. While formal services and supports are critical, research shows that informal networks – including friends and family – play a pivotal role in preventing domestic violence.
Stacey Brotzel from CTV has graciously agreed to emcee the event.
