Preschool Pioneers

Stoke the fire and fill the water basin! It’s time for Preschool Pioneers! Come down and discover John Walter’s restored 1901 mansion nestled in Edmonton’s river valley. Through hands-on activities like baking in a wood burning stove, helping out with traditional chores and old fashioned dress-up, your class will experience how life over 100 years ago was different than their own.
Note: 3 adult volunteers are required for this program.
Urban Pioneers
Grades: Kindergarten - Grade 3
Program Length: 2 hours
Fees: $145 for 1 class, $225 for 2 classes up to a maximum of 40 students
Available: Year-round
It was tough work being a pioneer! Transport your class back in time over one hundred years to John Walter’s 1875 and 1886 homes. Students will bring history to life by visiting John Walter’s general store, baking scones on a wood burning stove, churning butter, dipping a candle and making a wool based craft. Through these hands-on activities your class will discover the lives of early Edmontonians and experience how the Walter family and the community of Walterdale changed over time.

Boats and Buoyancy
Grade: 2
Program Length: 1.5 hours
Fee: $160 (includes materials)
Location: At your school
Available: September - April
John Walter was a master boat builder. He first came to Edmonton to build york boats for the Hudson’s Bay Company and then opened the first ferry across the North Saskatchewan River. Students will learn about density, propulsion and water transportation through hands-on activities and build their own working wooden paddle boats!

Pre-School Pioneer Christmas Party
Grades: Preschool - Kindergarten
Program Length: 1.5 hours
Fee: $125 for 1 class up to 30 students
Available: November 9 - December 18
The Walter’s need your help getting ready for Christmas morning! Together, we’ll bake cookies in our wood burning stove, sing Christmas carols and make holiday cards to take home. Your students will also discover seasonal traditions from Edmonton’s past through imaginative play and help wrap the Walters family Christmas gifts.
Note: 6 adult volunteers are required.
Pioneer Christmas Party
Grades: Kindergarten - Grade 3
Program Length: 2 hours
Fee: $145 for 1 class up to 30 students
Available: November 9 - December 18
Get ready for Christmas morning just like a pioneer! Your students will celebrate the holidays and Edmonton’s pioneering history by baking a delicious Christmas treat in our wood-burning stoves and discovering gifts exchanged in an early Edmonton home. Students will make their own holiday postcards and learn about local Christmas traditions.

Pre-School Pioneer Christmas in Your Classroom

Help our costumed volunteer prepare for the holidays! Your students will play holiday games, create their own Christmas cards and make a gift to take home. Then through imaginative play your class will discover winter fun and Christmas traditions from Edmonton’s past.

Pioneer Christmas in Your Classroom

Christmas morning will be here soon and we need your class to help prepare for the holidays! Your students will discover Christmas traditions from Edmonton’s past with our costumed interpreter. They’ll play holiday games, create their own Christmas cards and make a Christmas tree decoration to take home. Enjoy an old fashioned Christmas in your classroom with John Walter Museum.

Pioneer Family Life
Grades: Kindergarten - Grade 3
Program Length: 2 hours
Fee: $160
Location: At your school
Available: September – April
Your students will learn about the daily life of a pioneer child! They will discover what it was like to go to school over a century ago and find out what kind of chores a pioneer child was expected to do. Students will make a yummy treat, handle artifacts of the past, and hear exciting stories about Edmonton’s pioneer children!

Immerse your students into history through this customized program. Work with an interpreter to plan activities to meet your specific learning objectives. Themes and activities can include any combination of the following: settlement times, early Edmonton, working with hand tools, cooking and baking, toy building and more! You design the program using the Museum’s resources.
