Natural Treasures and Geocaching
Natural Treasure Program
Youth and families can learn about Edmonton’s wildlife and have a unique outdoor experience with this fun scavenger hunt! The Natural Treasure program is an exciting initiative from the Get to Know Program.
Participants follow a map or use a GPS device to complete an outdoor scavenger hunt by finding clues hidden around the Nature Centre.
Maps and GPS units are available at Guest Services (front desk) or in the Exhibit Room.
Participants can then visit the Natural Treasure website at home for fun challenges, games and stories, all of which relate to their outdoor experience.
Geocaching with GPS
GPS stands for Global Positioning System. A GPS receiver takes advantage of a system of satellites to determine your location. This has implications from field work to geocaching, a treasure-hunting activity that began online in May 2000.
GPS units can be signed out at the front desk at no cost, but visitors will be required to provide some personal information on the sign-out sheet.
Use the GPS unit to find the clues for the Get to Know Natural Treasure Program or find publicly-placed geocaches near the John Janzen Nature Centre.
After learning how to use a GPS unit at the Nature Centre, you can use your new geocaching skills at home by going to geocaching.com to find a geocache near you.
