Commonwealth Games Bid Information
The City of Edmonton is one of two cities competing for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The announcement as to whether Edmonton or our competitor Durban, South Africa will host the games won’t be made until September, 2015.
However, the bid, which must be submitted by March 2, 2015, will help advance the city's image as a great event host city, a reputation which started with the 1978 Commonwealth Games.
With more than 70 countries and 4000 athletes participating, hosting the Commonwealth Games is a valuable opportunity to showcase both Edmonton and Alberta on the international stage.
The City of Edmonton is proud to be working with the Province of Alberta to advance the bid and bring this showcase of athletic excellence to Edmonton.
As part of the next step in advancing the bid, the City will continue its discussions with the Province of Alberta and other stakeholders including Edmonton Economic Development and national and provincial sporting organizations.
This initiative will be community-driven and the City will be looking to engage Edmontonians in this exciting opportunity.
This event will showcase Edmonton’s passion for sport, strong community spirit and culture of volunteerism to the world.
If you would like to get involved with the City’s 2022 Commonwealth bid, or are looking for more information, email the City at CWG2022@Edmonton.ca.
