These long, slender snakes are a member of the rat snake family.
Taiwan beauty snakes are excellent climbers, using specialized scales to help them climb. Local people keep them for pest control in and around buildings.
When threatened, they defend themselves by drawing the forepart of their body into an “S” loop and rapidly vibrating their tail, mimicking a rattlesnake.
Beauty snakes are often hunted for leather production.
