Three-banded Armadillo

Scientific name: Tolypeutes matacus

Habitat: grasslands, marshes

Diet: larvae, ants, termites, fruits

Life span: 12-15 years

Young: 1 young

Size: 1-1.5 kg (2-3 lbs)

Armadillos are the only mammals to have a shell. Of the 25 species of armadillos, the three-banded is the only one that can completely roll itself into a ball as a defense against predators. 3 toes on the hind feet are fused together and resemble a hoof. Their front claws are very strong which helps them dig up ants and termites.
