The black-handed spider monkey lives in social groups of up to 30 members. They forage individually or in small groups, but gather to sleep together in the evening.
When spider monkeys encounter a threat they bark, growl, jump up and down, shake tree limbs and may even throw branches. If these tactics do not scare off the enemy, spider monkeys will move off rather than fight. Natural predators include harpy eagles and jaguars. Indigenous people may hunt them for food.
