Short-eared Owl

Scientific name: Asio flammeus
Habitat: marshes, bogs, open treeless areas
Diet: small mammals such as mice and voles
Life span: 2–13 years
Young: 4–7 eggs/clutch
Size: 200–475 g (0.4–1 lbs)
Female short-eared owls prepare for breeding season by scratching out a shallow indent in the earth and lining it with grass and feathers. This kind of nest is called a scrape.
Short-eared owls are most vulnerable to predation when they are young. Predators that attack short-eared owl nests (nest predators) include foxes, skunks, hawks, gulls and other owls.
