Oriental Fire-bellied Toad
Scientific Name: Bombina orientalis
Habitat: swamps, bogs, ditches, stagnant lakes
Diet: worms, snails, insects
Life span: 10–14 years
Young: 38–275 eggs/season
Size: 8–15 g (0.2–0.5 oz); females larger than males
This aquatic toad gets its name from the bright red or orange colouration on its belly. This bright colour is used to warn predators that it is toxic when eaten. When threatened, the fire-bellied toad exposes its belly as a warning.
These toads hibernate during the winter or dry season in groups of up to 6 individuals.
They are usually awake during the day, sitting and waiting for prey to come close enough to pounce at and eat.
They are popular pets.
