Imitator Poison Dart Frog

Scientific name: Dendrobates imitator
Habitat: lowland tropical rainforest, montane wet forest
Diet: ants, mites, fruit flies, beetles, springtails
Life span: 3–10 years
Young: 1–5 eggs/clutch
Size: 1.7–2.2 cm (0.7–0.9 in)
Imitator dart frogs are the only amphibians known to be monogamous. Due to the high level of care they receive, both parents must be active in raising the young. Females lay small clutches of eggs (1-5) in pools of water gathered in large leaves. After these eggs hatch the male moves the tadpoles, one-by-one, into small, private pools, found on large leaves. Females feed their tadpoles unfertilized eggs, and males watch over the tadpoles to ensure their nursery pools do not dry up.
