The City of Edmonton has received a grant from TD Green Streets to support planting native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers to create habitat for bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects near the John Janzen Nature Centre Pond.
Bring your whole family as the Nature Centre will also be hosting a bonfire where you can learn about native plant species, pollinators, and what you can plant at home to help bees, butterflies, and other bugs!

Site Preparation
You may notice the area around the pond looks different than usual. This is because we are preparing the site for planting. Steps to prepare the site include:
- Outlining the site with spray paint before mowing and raking out the grass and weeds.
- Controlling for noxious weeds* like Canada Thistle and Yellow Toadflax.
- Laying down mulch.
- Monitoring and controlling weeds until planting and after planting.
* Noxious weeds are plant species that are designated as "noxious weeds" in the Alberta Weed Control Act meaning their growth or spread needs to be prevented.
