Playground Maintenance

The City’s Playground Renewal Program is focused on the renewal and rebuilding of playgrounds throughout the city.

About the Program

Playgrounds are important community hubs in Edmonton. They foster play, social connection, exploration and imagination for residents of all ages.

Active projects are listed on this page. This means these projects have gone through the strategy stage and have received funding from the capital budget to begin the planning and design stage.

The scope of the playground renewal projects may include:

  • Replacing sand with surfacing for better accessibility
  • Repairing curbs, where necessary
  • Removing the existing play equipment
  • Adding new play equipment
  • Adding new pathways
  • Replacing benches and picnic tables
  • Adding trees and keeping mature trees, where possible

Project information, including public engagement opportunities, will be shared as available below.

Playground Renewal Project Process

Early in the project, the public is asked to share their thoughts on:

  • Preferred play activities and experiences
  • Playground colour preferences
  • Playground theme and play style
  • Other information and suggestions for the project team to consider

The feedback gathered during this phase is used to shortlist potential design options.

The City then chooses a final design using a combination of policy and program information, public engagement comments, technical requirements and available funding. Once finalized, the design is shared in the project section below.
